The starting (hiring) hourly rate for the Track Maintenance Technician position is $25.22. The full pay range for the position is $25.22 to $37.83 per hour.

Purpose of Role:
Conduct walking inspections and perform minor maintenance activities to support safe rail track and guideway operations.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in:

  • Track Rail Maintenance or maintenance laborer with experience in repair and inspections
  • Hands-on experience with hand tools, power tools, and light equipment used in maintenance, inspection, and repair tasks
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties.
  • Additional education cannot be substituted for experience.

Medical Examination:
Employment is contingent upon passing a DOT physical examination.

Drug Testing:
This position is safety sensitive and subject to Valley Metro RPTA's Drug & Alcohol Program. Employment is contingent on passing pre-employment drug screening.


Background Investigation:
Employment is contingent upon the results of a background check.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Valid Arizona Driver’s License and ability to maintain insurability under Valley Metro’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.
Position requires incumbent to obtain a Class B CDL permit within 90 days of hire and obtain a full class B CDL with Air Brake endorsement within 180 days (6 months) of hire.

  • Performs walking inspections of track alignment.
  • Inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs of track components, including turnouts and at-grade crossings, ensuring tracks are clear of debris and vegetation and allow for proper drainage.
  • Identify and gather required parts; perform welding, grinding, and cutting as needed; safely operate and maintain specialized vehicles (including hi-rail vehicles and trucks), tools, and equipment; and perform general cleaning and upkeep of vehicles, tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Assists and coordinates work with team members and contractors in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Respond to work orders and emergencies; maintain records, inspection and repair logs and reports; and manage parts and update inventory.
  • Paint and repair or replace curbing along the guideway; and maintain and replace signs.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Required Knowledge & Skills:
Knowledge of:
  • Basic rail track maintenance, inspection, and repair processes.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures for operating specialized tools and vehicles.
  • Fundamental grasp of vegetation control and drainage maintenance methods.
  • Application of inventory management and parts tracking procedures.
  • Understanding of record-keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Essential knowledge of signage maintenance and repair processes.
  • Using a computer and related software.
Skill in:
  • Inspecting rail and track components for defects or debris and safety issues.
  • Operating and maintaining specialized vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Responding to emergency work orders promptly.
  • Maintaining accurate logs and inventory records.
  • Assisting, supporting, and cross-training other employees effectively.
  • Performing cleaning and upkeep of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to exchange information and receive work direction.

Physical Demands / Work Environment


Work is performed in a combination of office, vehicle, and outdoor environments with routine use of standard office and specialized equipment. The position requires the ability to perform heavy physical work, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Essential physical functions include the ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, push, and pull; climb, kneel, bend, reach, twist, crouch, crawl, and balance; and use fine motor skills, visual acuity, hearing, and verbal communication. The work environment may include noise, distractions, time pressure, detailed or exacting tasks, frequent task changes, multitasking, emergency situations, irregular schedules, overtime, and working as part of a team.
