Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)

SUMMARY:

Working in cooperation with appropriate district supervisors, teachers, parents and students, the Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) shall be responsible for providing diagnostic and intervention services for students with speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders, helping students to adjust and access the general education curriculum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Participates in intake meetings and review paperwork of incoming freshmen to identify students who qualify for Speech and Language Services.
2. Screens and evaluates students, effectively shares results with parents and educational staff, and participates in the eligibility determination process during Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings in accordance with state and school division requirements and best practices.
3. Develops and implement the Individual Education Program (IEP) for students who qualify for Speech Language Services.
4. Provides Case Manager duties for Speech-Language Impaired only students.
5. Provides necessary supervision and collaboration with Speech and Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) as well as SLP/SLPA interns when requested.
6. Complies with all Medicaid requirements for school-based claiming, including timely filing of claims that meet Medicaid standards and signing off on behalf of the work of the SLPA.
7. Provides consultive services for school staff by sharing and demonstrating specific techniques and working with school teams to facilitate relevant and consistent interventions for targeted students and generalization of skills.
8. Schedules students and provide direct therapeutic services related to speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders, as well as provide materials and behavioral management strategies that will enable more effective learning.
9. Provides information, support, and counseling to parents, regarding their student\"s therapy plan and progress in therapy.
10. Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relationships with administrative and school staff.
11. Maintains and submits information/records required by district policy and state and federal law including student progress notes for students on caseload.
12. Participates in Speech Pathology Collaborative team meetings as well as appropriate school or district meetings.
13. Participates in Professional Growth activities or workshops to maintain state and national certification.
14. Communicates with community agencies that provide Speech-Language Pathology Services or which interface with the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
15. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

• Hold a master\"s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from an accredited program.
• Prior experience working with youth in the school setting preferred. Working knowledge of IEP development.
• Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

License and Certification Requirements:

• Holds a current license to practice speech therapy in the State of Arizona
• Current Speech and Language Pathologist-Certificate of Clinical Competency {SLP-CCC) license from the State of Arizona Department of Education and Department of Health Services.
• Possess certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• First Aid/CPR preferred.

• Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county, city, and district statutes, rules, policies and procedures.
• Ability to learn special methods and procedures specific to working with high-school-aged students.
• Understands the importance of physical access and participation, posture and movement skills, mobility skills, assessment, and maintenance of physical health, preparing for the transition from high school to postsecondary living, assistive technology.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district.
• Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
