Range Explanation:

  • Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

  • Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position.

This position performs routine trades or craftsman duties above the Park Technician I level, maintaining and repairing shooting ranges, grounds, and equipment. Also, participates in construction or renovation activities in parks. The work requires manual labor and the use of hand and powered tools, equipment or vehicles and frequently involves repetitive individual tasks in a variety of work settings in an outdoor environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Cuts, trims, edges, seeds, fertilizes, and stripes ball field and leisure turf;

  • Structurally prunes, shapes and maintains urban forest and ground vegetation;

  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments to plumbing and irrigation systems;

  • Operates ride-on equipment and utilizes powered maintenance and construction equipment/tools;

  • Performs operator-level inspections, servicing, maintenance and security of assigned tools, equipment and vehicles;

  • Applies paints, varnish, stains, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures;

  • Stores, handles, applies and disposes of hazardous materials required to complete work or generated by work assignments;

  • Collects and disposes of trash;

  • Maintains and uses safety and personal protective equipment;

  • Explains rules, regulations or procedures to the public and/or vendors;

  • May be assigned to a natural resource park setting, whereby maintenance may include wildlife drinkers, ponds, equestrian, camp facilities, trails, habitat restoration, erosion control, and invasive species;

  • Obtains and maintains AZ Department of Agriculture-Office of Pesticide Management – Certified Applicator license (Category #3-Ornamental and Turf and for some areas also Category 5 –Aquatic).

Minimum Qualifications:

Six months of experience performing duties in landscape, grounds maintenance, arborist, equipment operator, general handyman or similar duties in a specific skill, craft, vocation, trade or operational area of employment.

(Relevant training or education may substitute for up to six months of the aforementioned experience)

OR:

Six months of experience in a Pima County Parks Technician I, Parks Helper, or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Minimum two (2) years experience in landscape maintenance to include use and operation of riding mowers, string trimmers, pruning saws, chain saws, loppers, hand pruners, blowers, and small engine equipment.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience driving vehicles in the work site and on the roadways without restrictions; fork lift certification.

  • Minimum (3) years experience repairing machinery in a farm, factory, or an industrial setting.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience working at a public shooting range.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in the application of herbicides/pesticides.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience with housekeeping services, cleaning and sanitizes public areas; including ramada areas, tables, benches, and bleachers.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience performing manual labor and the using of hand tools.

  • Possess a Certified Applicator license (Category #3-Ornamental and Turf).

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certificates: All positions require AZ Department of Agriculture-Office of Pesticide Management – Certified Applicator license (Category #3-Ornamental and Turf) at the time of appointment or must obtain prior to completion of initial/promotional probation period (6-months). All positions must maintain the AZ Department of Agriculture-Office of Pesticide Management – Certified Applicator license while holding this position. Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to maintain the required licenses shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen. Physical/Sensory Requirements: Lifting heavy objects, operating machinery and equipment, and performing repetitive tasks such as mowing, pruning, and planting. Action Activity - bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, and stooping; Motion Activity - grasping; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas on a radio, behind themselves; Speaking Activity - in person, on a phone, on a radio; Vision - must be able to operate a motor vehicle, operate a commercial vehicle, operate machinery, operate forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish color, have depth perception, have peripheral vision. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
